Frequently Asked Questions

What is MADETONE?

MADETONE is a custom-made hair toning service.

We analyze your hair photos and tone goals, then create a personalized, salon-grade toner just for you — no guessing, no generic shades.

Is MADETONE a toner or a gloss?

It’s a custom toner, designed to refine and balance your existing hair tone. It does not change your base color or lighten your hair.

Who is MADETONE for?

MADETONE is perfect if your hair looks:

  • Too warm, brassy, or uneven
  • Flat or dull after coloring or bleaching
  • “Almost right” but never exactly how you want

If your tone feels off — MADETONE is for you.

Will this damage my hair?

No.

Our formulas are ammonia-free, low-volume, and created only to adjust tone — not to lift or alter your hair structure.

Do I need professional experience to use it?

Not at all. Each order comes with clear, step-by-step instructions customized to your hair type and tone.

How do you create my custom toner?

We use:

  • Your hair photos (front, back, sides)
  • Your quiz answers
  • Your tone goals

A specialist reviews everything and formulates your toner specifically for your hair.

Do I need to upload inspiration photos?

Inspiration photos are optional, but helpful. They make it easier for us to understand the tone you’re aiming for — while your own hair photos are required for accuracy.

How long do results last?

Results typically last 3–5 weeks, depending on:

  • Hair porosity
  • Wash frequency
  • Products you use

You can re-tone as needed without over-processing.

Can I use MADETONE on natural hair?

Yes — as long as your hair has some warmth or uneven tone you want to refine. MADETONE works on natural, colored, or previously bleached hair.

Will it turn my hair purple, gray, or too ashy?

No. Your formula is designed to neutralize, not overcorrect. We avoid harsh pigments and extreme results.

How long does it take to receive my toner?

Your custom formula is created fresh after review and shipped within a few business days.

Can I message you if I’m unsure?

Absolutely. We’re here to help — before, during, and after your toning process.

How many toners should I order?

It depends on your hair length and thickness:

  • Short to medium hair: 1 bottle is usually enough
  • Long or thick hair: We recommend ordering 2 bottles
  • Very long or very dense hair: 2 bottles ensure even, full coverage

If you’re unsure, it’s always safer to have extra — uneven application can affect results.

How do I apply MADETONE?
  1. Shampoo your hair and rinse thoroughly
  2. Gently towel-dry until hair is damp (not dripping wet)
  3. Apply the toner evenly from roots to ends
  4. Comb through to ensure full, even distribution
  5. Leave on for 15–20 minutes, checking tone as it processes
  6. Rinse thoroughly with water
  7. Blow-dry for best results and enhanced shine
How long does the toner last on hair?

The tone begins to fade after approximately 25 washes.

Longevity depends on:

  • Hair porosity
  • Wash frequency
  • Shampoo type
  • Heat styling habits

Using sulfate-free products and reducing heat helps extend results.

Can toner make my hair darker?

Yes, slightly.

A toner can subtly deepen the tone by adding pigment, without changing your base color or lifting the hair.

The effect is controlled and designed to enhance richness — not dramatically darken.

Does toner cover gray hair?

Toner does not fully cover gray hair. However, choosing a slightly deeper tone can softly blend and camouflage grays.

What should I know about warm tones?

Warm tones contain gold and red pigments. In sunlight, these can reflect golden or copper undertones — this is normal.

What is the difference between a gloss and a toner?

Toner corrects and balances tone.

Gloss adds shine and softness with minimal tone correction.

Key difference:

  • Toner: Tone correction + balance
  • Gloss: Shine + surface enhancement
Why do ash tones fade faster with heat?

Cool pigments fade faster with frequent heat styling, allowing warmth to show through. This is normal.

To extend ash tones:

  • Reduce heat styling
  • Use heat protection
  • Wash with cool to lukewarm water
Care recommendations

Use sulfate-free products, avoid hot water and excessive heat, and re-tone as needed for best results.

How often should I re-tone my hair?

Most clients re-tone every 2 months. Toner fades gradually, making regular re-toning safe and gentle.
